Cisco DS-X97-SF1-K9 (DS-9700-SUP1-K9) Full English Product Description
1. Short Official Part & License Label
DS-X97-SF1-K9 (Market Alias DS-9700-SUP1-K9): Cisco MDS 9700 Series Supervisor-1 Hot-Swappable Control Processor Module, Primary Management & Fabric Control Unit for MDS 9706 / MDS 9710 Multilayer SAN Directors, Runs Cisco NX-OS, Supports Fabric-1 Crossbar Modules, Stateful Active/Standby Failover, Nondisruptive Software Upgrade, Multiprotocol SAN Switching, End-of-Sale Legacy Supervisor for Datacenter Storage Area Networks
2. Full Product Overview
The Cisco MDS 9700 Supervisor-1 Module (DS-X97-SF1-K9) is the core control-plane supervisor hardware for the Cisco MDS 9706 (6-slot) and MDS 9710 (10-slot) multilayer SAN director chassis. It acts as the centralized brain for storage networking operations, responsible for chassis management, control-plane processing, fabric coordination, protocol operations, and system administration. Itdoes not support the MDS 9718 18-slot chassis; MDS 9718 requires Supervisor-1E (DS-X97-SF1E-K9).
For production high availability, two Supervisor-1 modules are installed in redundant active/standby configuration. It supports stateful failover: all runtime state, VSAN database, zoning, FSPF routing tables, and session information are continuously synchronized between peers, minimizing traffic interruption during switchover. The module runs Cisco NX-OS optimized for Fibre Channel storage networks, supporting native Fibre Channel, FCoE, FCIP, and IVR inter-VSAN routing.
Combined with Fabric-1 crossbar switching modules, Supervisor-1 enables up to12 Tbps non-blocking system bandwidth on MDS 9706 and 24 Tbps on MDS 9710. It supports line cards with 2/4/8/10/16/32G Fibre Channel and 10G/40G FCoE interfaces.
Lifecycle Status: DS-X97-SF1-K9 reached End-of-Sale (EoS). Its successor is Supervisor-4 module. Supported NX-OS releases up to newer 9.x code trains. Licensing is chassis-based, independent of supervisor hardware.
Key Differentiator vs Supervisor-1E: Supervisor-1E targets MDS 9718 large 18-slot director; Supervisor-1 only works on MDS 9706 / MDS 9710. Compared to Supervisor-4: Lower CPU and memory capacity, no secure boot, older generation architecture.
