Cisco ISR4451-X/K9 Full English Product Description

Product Overview

TheCisco ISR4451-X/K9(shortened as ISR4451/K9) is a high-capacity 2RU rack-mount integrated services router within the Cisco ISR 4400 Series, built for large enterprise regional branches, multi-site headquarters, financial institutions, healthcare campuses, and high-load hybrid SD-WAN edge gateways. It adopts an independent three-plane hardware architecture (dedicated data, control, and services processing cores) powered by modular Cisco IOS XE operating system, with factory-integrated K9 hardware crypto acceleration. Compared to the 1RU ISR4431, it adds dual SM-X service module slots, doubles baseline throughput to 1 Gbps (upgradable to 2 Gbps), supports redundant hot-swappable AC power supplies, and delivers higher concurrent performance for routing, security, voice, WAN optimization, and edge virtualization workloadsCisco. This AC-powered base SKU consolidates multi-service networking onto one chassis to eliminate standalone firewall, voice gateway, WAN accelerator, and virtualization appliances, drastically cutting branch total cost of ownership (TCO).

Core Hardware Specifications

Fixed Onboard Interfaces

  • 4× combo 10/100/1000BASE-T Gigabit Ethernet ports: each port supports both RJ45 copper and SFP fiber transceivers (4 RJ45 + 4 SFP media options for flexible LAN/WAN uplinks)
  • 2× USB 2.0 Type-A ports for zero-touch provisioning (ZTD), external log storage, image backup and file transfer
  • Dual management console: Mini-USB Type B serial console + standard RJ45 console port
  • RJ45 auxiliary port for out-of-band remote access via analog modem
  • Front-panel real-time status LEDs for power, fan, temperature, port link/activity, and PoE status

Expansion Slots (Key Upgrade vs ISR4431)

  • 3× hot-swappable NIM (Network Interface Module) slots, fully OIR (Online Insertion and Removal) compliant. Compatible with T1/E1, xDSL, serial leased lines, 4G/5G LTE cellular gateways, and PoE switch modules
  • 2× single-wide SM-X enhanced service module slots (absent on ISR4431) for high-density PVDM4 voice DSP blades, WAAS WAN optimization engines, high-speed switching extensions, or virtualization acceleration
  • 1× internal ISC slot for dedicated hardware crypto acceleration engine

Split-Plane Memory Architecture

  • Dedicated Data Plane DRAM: 2 GB ECC DDR3 default, fixed maximum 2 GB for wire-speed packet forwarding
  • Control & Services Plane DRAM: 4 GB ECC DDR3 default, expandable up to maximum 16 GB for large routing tables, security policies, QoS queues, and virtualized NFV workloads
  • Industrial flash storage: 8 GB default, upgradable to maximum 32 GB for IOS XE images, local logging, and virtual machine disk storage

Throughput & Encryption Performance

  • Baseline unlicensed aggregate multi-service throughput: 1 Gbps
  • Performance license upgrade unlocks full 2 Gbps aggregate routing throughput, expanding data plane cores from 6 to 10 for heavy mixed services trafficCisco
  • Hardware-accelerated encrypted VPN throughput up to 1.6 Gbps, supporting massive concurrent IPsec site-to-site tunnels and SSL remote worker VPNs
  • Total system switching fabric bandwidth exceeds 4 Gbps to eliminate forwarding bottlenecks under simultaneous firewall, NAT, IPSec, VoIP, and SD-WAN traffic

Power & Physical Form Factor

  • Form factor: 2 Rack Units (2RU), standard 19-inch rack mount brackets included
  • Dual redundant hot-swappable AC power supply support (factory single AC PSU, optional second PSU for power redundancy)
  • AC input: 100–240 VAC auto-ranging, 47–63 Hz frequency
  • Optional high-wattage PoE-capable PSU to power PoE NIM/SM-X modules; DC -48V telecom power variant available for carrier-grade deployments
  • Physical dimensions (H × W × D): 88.9 mm × 438.15 mm × 469.9 mm
  • Operating temperature range: 0°C to 40°C (32°F–104°F) for standard indoor enterprise deployments

Integrated Functional Capabilities

1. Native Cisco IOS XE SD-WAN & Intelligent WAN (IWAN)

Full-featured embedded SD-WAN stack supporting multi-transport hybrid WAN architectures including MPLS private circuits, fiber broadband, and 4G/5G LTE wireless backup. It delivers application-aware dynamic traffic steering, real-time path quality monitoring, centralized orchestration via Cisco vManage or DNA Center, and mass zero-touch provisioning for global distributed branch rollouts. Built-in cloud on-ramp optimizes low-latency connectivity to SaaS and public cloud platforms.

2. K9 Hardware-Accelerated Enterprise Security

  • Dedicated AES-256 crypto engine for high-speed IPsec site-to-site VPN and SSL remote access VPN tunnels
  • Zone-Based Firewall (ZBFW), embedded Firepower Next-Generation IPS, URL filtering, and advanced malware threat defense
  • Cisco Trustworthy Systems framework: secure boot, runtime image integrity validation, FIPS 140-2 certified crypto modules
  • Application Visibility and Control (AVC), Control Plane Policing (CoPP), and TrustSec group-based micro-segmentation
  • Local secure internet breakout to reduce costly central data center backhaul congestion

3. Unified Communications (UC)

Compatible with PVDM4 digital signal processor modules deployed in SM-X slots to deliver enterprise-grade VoIP trunking, HD video conferencing, Cisco SRST Survivable Remote Site Telephony, CME Call Manager Express, and CUBE Unified Border Element, supporting dense IP phone deployments at large regional branch sites.

4. Edge NFV Virtualization

Supports Cisco NFVIS virtualization infrastructure, enabling deployment of virtual network functions (vFirewall, vWAN optimizer, monitoring agents, virtual load balancers) directly on the router hardware without standalone branch servers. This consolidates physical appliances, reduces rack space occupation, and lowers on-site maintenance overhead.

5. Modular In-Service Upgrades

All NIM and SM-X modules support OIR hot swap, allowing live WAN/LAN service expansion or replacement without full chassis reboot or production service outage.

Software & Licensing

  • Operating System: Modular, upgradeable Cisco IOS XE
  • Base IP Base feature set preloaded: static routing, OSPF, EIGRP, basic NAT, ACL, and hierarchical QoS functionality
  • Optional subscription add-on licenses: Performance Boost, Advanced Security, Full SD-WAN, DNA Advantage, Unified Communications, WAAS Optimization
  • Lifecycle status: ISR 4400 Series reached End-of-Sale on November 7, 2023; official Cisco TAC technical support terminates November 30, 2028. Recommended replacement platform: Cisco C8300 series high-performance edge routersCisco

Typical Deployment Use Cases

  1. Large enterprise regional branch offices requiring 1 Gbps–2 Gbps multi-service throughput
  2. Financial, retail chain headquarters and multi-building healthcare campuses with converged SD-WAN, voice, and integrated security
  3. Carrier colocation and telco remote edge sites with optional -48V DC power and NEBS compliance
  4. Distributed branches running virtualized network functions and high-volume encrypted VPN tunnels
  5. Hybrid cloud gateway deployments with secure direct internet breakout and SaaS acceleration

Core Differentiators vs ISR4431/K9
